Harassment due to Feminine Username
The report on ethnomethodological experiment reveals the shared norms and cultural conventions governing sex, sexuality, gender and the societal reaction to the violation of the norms. The research report analyzes the range different rules that people follow each day in social interactions. According to the results, the social interactions among the groups in public are governed by folk rules. According to the result, there are set of rules shared by the people that determine the behavior in novel situations.
1 Description of the gender and sexuality related norm breached
The advancement in technology has led to the rise in online interactions especially on social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Google among others. Accessing such media platforms requires that a person uses username and passwords to log into the accounts. Concerning the norms of the current society, women feel embarrassed due to the usernames they employ to access the various accounts.
2 Hypothesis of the research
Women get embarrassed or harassed online because of their gender, sex, and sexuality as perceived by most male social colleagues who see their usernames. I usually get worried about what women feel when they get messages due to their usernames. Thus, I decided to survey how females are harassed and how they believe in social media due to their username.
3 Description of the event/violation
The survey was purposed to experiment how people treat online users especially ladies concerning their usernames. Both male and female usernames were created randomly online to create fake online profiles. The profiles created were both for males and female with one gender neutral username. Afterward, the profiles were monitored for three days regarding reports on messages and profile. The numbers of replies and comments on all the profiles were collected and categorized as harassments, abuses and other unpleasant information.
4 Reactions
* Reactions of the public
On the question of personal feeling after violation in the fake profile accounts that were opened using female usernames, I opened a male profile with a male username [email protected]. The reaction was typical with few friend request messages from ladies. The tones of the message were reasonable and friendly. However, Jonas who pretended to be female with [email protected] received a total of six seductive messages of which he objected consent. Consequently, he got abusive replies revealing all sorts of names. He felt uncomfortable reading the comments because due to his refusal to accept all the requests from the male colleagues who sent the text messages. Most probably, the owners of the messages thought he was a lady or some night escort. Minimal information was found in neutral gender profile especially from ladies. However, the about eight messages were majorly abusive messages from men who thought the user was a "lesbian." The messages were mostly embarrassing that made me guilty.
