According to Kant, a self-incurred minority is a person's inability to grasp or develop their understanding without the supervision or guidance of another person. Kant speaks of people's incapability to utilize their own inquisitiveness and curiosity to gain knowledge and attain enlightenment. He talks of the cowardice and laziness that people usually manifest, especially regarding attaining knowledge or utilizing their understanding. Kant criticizes the idea of people having others acting as their guide in their journey to attain enlightenment. He makes it clear that this sort of enlightenment is a prison that keeps one committed and obedient to the beliefs and doctrine of those that guide them. The more someone continues to buy into the doctrine of their guardians or supervisors, the more it becomes natural for one to seek help and engage their curiosity further. Kant speaks of people being fond of having guardians and developing an innate feeling or atmosphere to their inability to use their own understanding. Eventually, they believe in their short-handedness and yield their freedom to explore and inquire.
