Psychological disorders among the human species have always been there and they continue to be a burden to social agents and the healthcare systems around the globe. Depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, and schizophrenia just to mention but a few are the most notable mental illnesses around the globe. Some mental illnesses are preventable while others are both preventable and treatable. However, other mental illnesses are hereditary and complex to handle, leaving social support institutions as the only option of refuge from the suffering that they inflict. This paper seeks to provide a deep dive into Schizophrenia and in particular paranoid Schizophrenia as portrayed by Dr. Spencer Reid, a fictional character in the crime drama series, Criminal Minds.
Dr. Spencer Reid did not only exhibit symptoms of paranoid Schizophrenia but also Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) to be specific, a perfect double-hit. The systems of AS and paranoid Schizophrenia overlapped as portrayed by Dr. Spencer Reid. However, Dr. Reid was in his early twenties when he started exhibiting symptoms of paranoid Schizophrenia. In most episodes of the television series, Dr. Reid avoided hugging or shaking hands at all costs even with the members of the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), his closest associates. At some point, he experienced a series of headaches to an extent of being convinced that something is not right with him, he even locked himself in his apartment to avoid talking to anyone. Throughout the series, Dr. Reid hardly initiates any conversation that could lead to an intimate relationship, neither did he have a girlfriend for the most of series up until a point where he was pushed by a social therapist. Her mother, Diana Reid, who also suffers from schizophrenia spent most of the time in a psychiatric facility and he tried to put him under numerous trial medication all in vain.
