The career of a lawyer involves taking the position of an advocate and a legal advisor on behalf of an individual (client). According to Wang (127), lawyers are also referred to as attorneys, solicitor barristers or advocates. The profession requires higher levels of social interactions between the lawyer and parties involved in a particular legal case as it involves fostering multiple avenues of communication. Lawyers are faced with the obligations of interpreting laws for their clienteles, presentation of facts on behalf of their customers and availing arguments in the court of law. As a consequence, working as a lawyer demands for adoption of critical social reasoning and interactive skills in order to facilitate efficiency in judicial processes such as advancing courtroom strategies, initiating pleadings, making oral arguments in the court, counseling their clients on the applicability of their facts in the cases under litigation and gathering the pieces of evidence needed to exonerate the parties under investigation. The degree of structure of the legal career is greatly dictated by the environment of practice and the professional area of specialization.
Lawyers are required to complete a minimum of seven years in their post-secondary education. Wang (217) reveal that the professionals are faced with the obligation of completing a four year course of study while pursuing undergraduate education and three extra years in law school. As a consequence, proper preparation to the pursuits needed in law school makes it a requirement that the prospective lawyers must complete undergraduate courses that will allow them to hone their potencies in writing, critical thinking, and speaking.
