Triangular relationships are in the play Hamlet
In this play by Shakespeare there are underlying sexual tensions that consist the triangular relationships, one of such relationship is between son and mother, in pursuit of Gertrude’s affection there is jealousy that comes up between Hamlet and Claudius. Gertrude is also confused with her emotions as she is torn between the love of her son and the love she has for Claudius which is another triangular relationship (Bullough, Geoffrey Volume VII. Vol. 7).However the triangular relationship is not quite the right term for these relationships since these are sexual tensions that come up between different individuals in the play.
Gertrude is referred as the queen of Denmark and is the mother to Hamlet who recently married Claudius. Gertrude loves her son deeply but she has a weakness in that she values affection more than anything else, moral value and rectitude should always take precedence in such a scenario. Hamlet is accused of raping his mother which is incestuous in nature, they have a lustful relationship. Hamlet is an introvert character and more specifically a melancholy, he is cynical and full of hatred for his uncle and is disgusted by his mother’s sexuality (Bullough, Geoffrey Volume VII. Polonius is a conniving old man and also the Lord of Chamberlain and he is also the father to Ophelia and Laertes. Another important character in the play is Horatio who after Hamlets death lives to tell the story. He is his close friend and was educated at the University of Wittenberg. He is a loyal friend and very helpful to Hamlet throughout the play (Bullough, Geoffrey Volume VII. Vol. 7).Ophelia is a young naïve girl who is dependent on met to guide her on how to behave, she is the brother to Laertes and her father is Polonius. Hamlet have been in love with her and she has helped Polonius spy on him. She is sweet and innocent and she remains calm...
