While asleep at the Green Knight’s castle, the lord / host moves out to hunt and t Gawain is tested while left in the castle. The host’s lady offers her body to him, but t Gawain still maintains his honor by refusing her offer and does not realize this was a test. Gawain’s greatest weakness is exposed in the third test when he accepted a girdle that was supposedly protective. The host caught a deer, boar and fox, while Gawain and the host agreed with the lord that he would share whatever animal he had caught so long as Gawain informed him about his daily activities in each of the three days.
In the first day the host hunted a deer and this is similar to Gawain’s experience during first day as the host’s wife did not pose a danger to Gawain. Just like the deer are without much resistance, so is the experience of Gawain during that day. the host’s lady stated “My Lord and his liegemen are long departed, the household asleep, my handmaids too,” (1231-1232) Gawain realized that the host’s wife was in the room and pretended that he was still sleep to evaluate what was her intention, and he acted surprised when he was finally awake. “At the clamor of the quest, the quarry trembled, deer dashed through the, dale dazed with dread”(1150 ). Even the host’s wife was more careful not to unsettle the guest as she was afraid that her plan would likely fail
