Biblical Belief and Biblical Reaction
What does the fullness of scripture teach us is good and right and true? Have I made a thorough search, not merely recounted a few famous verses I’m already familiar with? Am I listening to scripture such that I’m genuinely willing to be changed by it, to admit when I’m wrong, to choose a new path?
The term fullness, first of all, indeed has a deeper meaning in the bible. While it has been used several times in the bible, in only a few instances can the meaning be considered theologically significant. In one of the instances where the word Fullness is used in Deuteronomy 33: 16-17, Moses blesses Joseph’s tribe and says
With the best gifts of the earth and its fullness and the favor of him who dwelt in the burning bush.
In the excerpt above, Moses used it to simply show the satisfaction that comes with being in favor with God. He was blessing a tribe and bestowing them the fullness of God’s favor. This means he wished them nothing short of God’s spiritual blessings.
When it comes to teaching what is good, right, and true, the scripture is indeed heavy and laden with a lot of verses. First of all, in Philippians 4:8, Paul’s message was clear when he said, “Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable, if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.” The truth is Paul was had the word in his heart and he could have continued to preach to the Philippians. He indeed could have written more about people obeying God and rejoicing in the Lord. However, he decides to provide the Philippi with a summary of what or how a Christian life should be. Paul opts to provide them with one of the most important verses in the bible. In a single sentence, Paul makes it known to every believer that there are a few things God cares about and in only these things should one rejoice.
Pleasing God can indeed be made to sound impossible or something that is almost out of this world. However, taking Paul’s advice and simply living it can change a person’s life. The truth is, a majority of Christians read their bibles every day but only a few take their time to meditate or think about what they have read. Looking at how the scripture talks of growth and the word, it is indeed evident that these two words cannot be separated. Growth and the word are directly proportional and neither can supersede the other. The more we read, the more we grow. However, Psalms 1:2 says “But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law does he meditate day and night.” As a Christian, one ought to live in the word and according to the word for them to be considered whole. John 8: 31-32, “To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”” It is only by the word that one be set free.
