Texting and Driving
The number of people using electronic devices is rapidly increasing worldwide. Millennials have been brought up in the age of technology, and they cannot spend about one hour without checking any updates on their smartphones or tablets. In particular, staying informed through mobile phones is not a problem, but texting while driving is a real societal issue. Drivers are always advised to avoid distractions while behind the wheel so that they can respond to anything that might arise appropriately. However, texting takes away an individual’s focus on the road, which might lead to a road accident due to poor response. Texting while driving is a significant problem in the community that makes many young people perish from road crashes.
Specifically, texting while driving is the primary cause of multiple accidents for drivers aged between 16 and 19 years. Currently, smartphones provide connectivity that has become part of individuals’ daily lives. They offer various functionalities that enable people to keep in touch with their friends and families. For example, with a smartphone, one can chat with others via text messaging, WhatsApp, Twitter, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Kit Delgado, Kathryn Wanner, and Catherine McDonald (2016) affirm that approximately 169.3 billion messages were shared in different parts of the world in 2014. Moreover, many adolescents reported that they sent about 100 text messages daily since it is the most significant way of connecting with others (Delgado et al. 80). As such, these young people have a high likelihood of texting while driving, which might distract them and cause road accidents.
