Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein wonderfully demonstrates the argument of nature versus nurture. The creature created by Dr. Frankenstein has been depicted in James Whale’s film in 1931 to have experienced persecution and hate from the villagers wanting to destroy it. Another view is from the Bride of Frankenstein in 1935 where society was also the one who is pushing the creature to fight for its life, for it to survive. This raises the question of whether the hunting and persecution for this creature is truly justifiable.
At the “birth” or creation of this creature, it was described by Dr. Frankenstein to be a catastrophic event that led to the creation of a monster. In this scenario, we already see the judgment that was first given by Dr. Frankenstein, who was known by the creature to be its “father”. Dr. Frankenstein has described feelings of shock and disgust towards the creature, and he fled when it was trying to reach for his hand (Shelley). Here, we see that the creature is not evil from the start, and is very comparable to what a newborn would be doing upon seeing a parent or caretaker. The creation that Dr. Frankenstein himself has assembled from his scientific adventures, was also rejected by himself because of the unnatural beginning and difference of his creature to a normal human being. This literature also shows how much the rejection of a parent from the start affects and pushes the creature more to descend into madness and evil (Ginn).
