Love poetry as a means for the expression of virility
In the city of Rome, new ideas have blossomed in regards to the topic of love, fallen in and out of love, as well as making love in the world of poetry. Due to the chaos brought by politics and the start of personal freedoms, lyric poetry have emerged.
Cornelius Gallus is one of the prominent poets of Latin love elegy. However, his reputation is counterbalancedby the limited information not only about himself, but also about his works in poetry. Gallus is known for his written poetry for courtesans. He was known to be in a relationship with Cyntheris who abandoned him to follow another guy in Gaul. It was believed that Lycoris pertains to this mistress. Lycoris is featured in one of his four books of poetry which were called Amores. It depicted here Gallus’ acute love pangs.
Another prominent poet in Latin love elegy is Propertius. His character thrived from being struck with love and somewhat caught off guard, antagonized, and distressed, who become a man who was able to defy his lovesickness in order to understand it. His characterization depicts his lack of control as he was a slave of his love to Cynthia who took hold and control of him. In Propertius’ first poem in Elegies, it highlighted his battle with love and what it takes when one is overpowered by love.
Tibullus poetry in Latin love elegy provides his perspective on human aggression and war. He acknowledges the consequences of war and longs for escape and peace along with the things that go with peace. As for Tibullus, the thrills and spills of an erotic identity does not matter to him as compared to his subtle contemplations concerning his cultural identity wherein his lovers was portrayed as a fashionable decoration.
