The contrast between the two general 
Lee grew up in a cultural, traditional home in Virginia while Grant was just a son of a tanner in the western frontier. These two grew up differently and had different beliefs on survival and dominance. Lee believed in dominating others to survive. He bought about the law of land ownership. Also, Lee believed all men have equal rights and should have an equal chance. He believed that the landowners should have time to rest while the rest work for them. On the other hand, Grant does not believe in the slavery of other men. His focus is on the future.
