Shakespeare opens the play with a powerful speech by Richard III. What do you think Richard reveals about himself and his plans in this speech? What role do dreams, prophecies, and curses play in The Tragedy of King Richard the Third? Do you think these devices make the play seem more or less true to life? Why or why not? Do you think Shakespeare’s portrayal of the king was accurate? Why or why not?
The speech by Richard III has significantly revealed his characteristics and has also divulged his plans. For example, Richard asserts that since he is not happy because he is not sexually successful with women, he is determined to destroy and devastate the prosperous times by making other people feel miserable.
