“The Divergent Series” by Veronica Roth presents a very interesting plot as the story is dictated by a unique character. In the first 10 chapters of the book, my initial impression of the narrator was that she had personal doubts, and she was excited to see the bigger world beyond her life so far. The narrator shows courage and openness to experiences, but at the same time, she somehow is battling in knowing her identity and understanding herself, especially through the “divergent” label of people like her. In reality, I think that all people express different traits from the different factions and that it is not as easy to divide and label people according to the 5 factions alone.
The protagonist chose to be in Dauntless, a faction that is military-like, highlighting the traits of bravery and obedience. In the quote from the book: “…the Dauntless have different rules—rules that brutality does not violate.”, the meaning of this is related to the narration by the protagonist:
“The gray clothes, the plain hairstyle, and the unassuming demeanor of my faction are supposed to make it easier for me to forget myself...
