Losing Integrity and Ethical Behavior due to Ensuing Pressure for Providing News
The main idea of the news report discussed the issues of defunding the police in Seattle. The city council’s decision to cut the police budget by 20% has led to an increase in crime and had caused a total of 335 police officers to separate. The cut in police budget was to try to address the issue of police violence in Seattle.
I believe the newscaster had violated an ethical principle as they did not correctly verify the sources of the information they stated to the former mayoral candidate. The newscaster had stated that a Seattle council member’s office is asking what a 50% budget cut would do mean to SPD. The former mayoral candidate stated that they were not asking for a 50% budget cut as they are unable to make up for the damages that the budget cut of 20% had caused. They didn’t correctly verify the source as they didn’t provide the member they spoke with.
Another ethical principle that was violated is the accuracy of the police members who separated. In the news report, they stated that nearly 150 police officers had separated in 2021 with a total of 335 officers since last year. Two sentences later they stated that 129 officers have left HPD this year (which is still 2021) and has 20 more separations in line to be processed. I believe this information is not correct and they are confusing the readers by adding incorrect calculations of the officers being separated.
News reporters have succeeded or failed in acting ethically due to the pressure of providing the juiciest news to the audience while competing with other news companies. These ways include publishing allegations by a single source without verifying accuracy, omitting facts that would clearly lead the audience to a different conclusion, not being completely truthful with the information they announce, not using verified sources to back up their research, and plagiarizing the report.
