Evolution of Policing in Canada
The policing environment has shifted radically over the past decade. It is no longer sufficient to arrest and punish criminals; modern-day law enforcement must also prevent crime and play a significant role in community engagement and education. The evolution of policing in Canada can be traced to the early 1800s when the Northwest Mounted Police was established to deal with illegal trade and the influx of American whiskey traders into western Canada. The NWMP was initially called "The Mounties," This name lives on in their modern-day counterparts, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). Today's RCMP is a federal force that serves an entire country. Across Canada, there are over 20,000 active police officers serving at 1,700 different detachments. They utilize various technologies, such as infrared cameras and drones, to help trace criminals (Turner, 2021; Graybill, 2004). The evolution of policing in Canada has shaped the Canadian policing system and continues to do so. The history of policing in Canada is a very complex and dynamic one (Lunney, 2012). It can be traced back to before Canada was a country, and like many other aspects of Canadian society, it was influenced by British rule.
