Rape is among the most common form of sexual violence. Historically, rape if often been reported to occur mostly on female victims. In modern society, however, there are reported cases in which men are victims of rape. Regardless of the gender that is victimized, rape is a prevalent and severe societal problem that requires collaboration from multiple stakeholders to find solutions. Police departments and the District Attorney's office is among the key stakeholders. Often, however, victims of rape are not always satisfied by how the cases are handled by these two key offices.
Cause of Dissatisfaction in Reporting
According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), people rarely lie about experiencing sexual violence: rape and sexual assault. Despite this fact, many survivors choose not to report to law enforcement agencies for several reasons. Among these reasons, the most important is that most victims are dissatisfied with how the police and the district attorney's office handle the cases. With an estimated 63% of unreported patients CITATION NSV20 \l 2057 (NSVRC, 2020), it is vital to interrogate the aspects of the two offices that reduce the need for victims to report. Understanding these aspects is critical for providing measures that will allow and encourage more cases to be reported to end the sexual violence problem.
In the victim's case, the first problem is fear of retaliation, which may include physical abuse, demotion, denial of promotion, or the potential to lose a job. In this aspect, victims are dissatisfied because they will not receive the protection they need from retaliation.
