Huckleberry Finn Discussion Heart vs. Conscience
Having a sound heart is a natural feeling that occurs in every human hence giving them the ability to have considerations of the effects of their acts enabling them to choose what is right. On the other hand, a conscience can be explained as the inner voice of human beings or what they have been taught and controls what people do on the outside. The Twains quote can be justified by the definitions of a sound heart and a deformed conscience because if one is not experiencing the right inner voice, then their sound heart feelings will always win in that specific situation. A deformed conscience is an unhealthy sense of morality which leads one into doing something that is not right according to the society. Therefore, the scenes from chapter sixteen and thirty-one offer good explanations justifying the quote.
In chapter sixteen, Huck has to face choices of deciding what is right in regard to what he has been taught or what his heart feels (K Twain, Mark, Gerald Graff, and James Phelan 1995)..The teachings represent his deformed conscience while what he feels in his heart is a representation of a sound heart. Huck is represented as a good person but then the society has taught different things hence corrupting his conscience and making it a deformed one.
