Daily Grade 13: Self-Assessment. Literature & Language Essay

Essay Instructions:

Scenario: You are about to enter the job market and need to carefully and honestly evaluate yourself -- past, present and future -- so that you'll have some insight on what kinds of jobs, workplaces and/or working conditions best suit you. To begin that process, read each question below carefully, and respond to each group of questions in a separate paragraph. Completing a self-assessment is a good first step in the job search process because it helps you figure out what you want beyond the obvious rewards of a job such as a paycheck and benefits.
How far along into your college education are you, and how long do you have left? What are your career plans/goals? What academic, work and/or personal experiences from your past made you choose that career? Why do you think that career suits you? In other words, what skills, strengths and/or personality traits do you have that make you a good fit for your career choice?
What educational and/or work achievements have given you the most satisfaction? Why did you enjoy them? What jobs would offer that kind of satisfaction? What educational and/or work expectations have you struggled with and why? How do you anticipate dealing with those challenges once you're in the post-college workforce?
Think about working conditions that suit you. Would you rather have a firm deadlines or a flexible schedule? Do you prefer working independently or with other people? Do you prefer specific instructions and standards for evaluation or freedom and uncertainty? How comfortable are you with pressure? How much challenge do you want?
What kind of work life balance do you want? Are you willing to take work home? Do you want to work weekends? To travel? How important is money to you? Prestige? Time to spend with family and friends?
How fast do you want to move up? Are you willing to pay your dues for several years before you are promoted?
Where do you want to live? What features in terms of weather, geography, cultural and social life do you see as ideal?
Is it important to you that your work achieve certain purposes or values, or do you see work as just a way to make a living? Are an organization's culture and ethical standards important to you? If so, what values will you look for?
What are the traditional or typical jobs/career paths are for a person with the degree you are pursuing? You can also give examples of common types of companies or institutions where someone with your degree would find employment. Then attempt to think - as the old business cliché goes - outside the box. What are some not-so-common types of places someone with your degree might find employment, and why might those be more suited to you? The idea is to try to match your personal qualities and values with your educational experience and professional aspirations.
-----------------------------------
Since the assignment is about and for you, not your audience, your responses do not have to demonstrate you-attitude and conciseness. Otherwise, write as thoughtfully, carefully and correctly as possible. Your responses will be graded on detail and development, not correctness or business style.
Strive to include specific details and examples to develop your answers/responses. Effort goes a long way in an assignment like this, so do not simply respond to the questions in short-answer form, such as I have people skills. I have strong communication skills. When people make statements like that, they are merely telling the reader what they think is true instead of showing the reader what is true. A critical reader will view answers like that and think, "Really? Anyone can say that. Prove it." It's your job not to simply tell but to show your answers as well as the communication skills you've developed during the course of this semester.
Formatting and Length: In a Microsoft Word document, write a paragraph in response to each "cluster" of questions for a total of eight paragraphs. Be sure to answer all questions within each cluster. Your paragraphs will be different lengths. You can copy and paste the prompts into your Word document to keep track of them as you write, but please remove the prompts before submitting, leaving only your responses in the document.
