Ideal Citizen in a Totalitarian Government
A totalitarian government can be described as a government that has in its control absolute power over the citizens. Unlike a democratic government, a totalitarian government does not take into consideration what the public wants (Legutko, 2016). Instead, it dictates to its citizens on what to do and what no to do. A totalitarian government does not allow any opposition, and it takes upon itself to run the state and the lives of its citizens. Human history has witnessed totalitarian governments headed by dictatorial leaders.
One of the totalitarian governments that existed was in Uganda under the regime of Idi Amin Dada. In 1971, Idi Amin overthrew the then government and declared himself president. He ruled Uganda from 1971 to 1979 where he was overthrown. During his tenure, he lived a very extravagant life, which contributed to the downfall of Uganda’s economy. He was determined to remain as the president, so he did all he could, including violation of human rights such as mass killings. It is believed that during his reign, more than 300,000 people were killed.
One of the ways through which Idi Amin impeded over the citizen’s rights is through violence and instilling fear in them. He would order the execution of anyone who defied his orders or went against him. He even ordered the killing of anyone who supported a rebellious leader. With this, the Ugandan citizens did not have the right to expression. During his Amin’s era, people were not even allowed to make decisions about their lives. Idi Amin and his totalitarian government made sure that everyone in the state was neutralized and not a threat to the presidency.
