1. Read the following information on visual arguments: Visual Argument Unit.pdf
2. Then, select 3 ads. The ads can be any range of years or eras, can be a variety of products, or even products from the same company. The ads cannot be commercials. For more specific details, you can view this video for help:

3. Finally, write a paper analyzing the ads you have selected.
For the analysis paper, identify the major claim and minor claim based on the claims in the the handout listed above titled "Visual Argument Unit" which discussed 10 different ad claims.
Identify the cultural values, ideals, and hidden desires of the common person. Does the visual reinforce the values or question them?
You should include a discussion on the design of the ad, including the use of symbols, color, and the placement of words and images.
You should also include any other relevant information that is mentioned in the notes regarding concepts discussed in class, thus far.
4. Things to be careful with while completing the assignment:
a. Do not forget to write an introduction and a conclusion for the entire paper, not for each image. Each ad needs to be incorporated into the essay with your introduction and conclusion. You are not completing 3 separate essays, just 1. The introduction and conclusion unify your discussion. Here is where using similar products from the same company works well because you can look at how one company creates an argument in comparison to another.
b. Do not forget to include the ads in the final paper.
c. Do not submit 3 separate files. Again, you are completing one essay with 3 ads discussed.
d. Do not copy and paste your paper in the submission text box. Upload an attachment in either Word, .rtf, or .pdf.
e. Make sure to format the essay using MLA documentation style, which includes 1" margins, 12pt. font, double-spaced lines, and the proper header with your last name and the page number and the proper heading with your full name, instructor name, class, and date. Finally, don't forget a creative and engaging title.

Coca-Cola Visual Campaigns Through the Years
Coca-Cola is one of if not the biggest brands in the world. Since it was founded, the company and the brand have retained a strong presence and image worldwide. A significant contributor to its lasting image is the excellent advertising that Coca-Cola relies on. In the 1920s, Coca-Cola was still establishing its place in the market. Yet, through skillful advertising, it could penetrate a major niche in the population. In the 1950s, the brand remained relevant by focusing on post-war trends. Today, Coca-Cola stays ahead of its non-existent competition by tapping into individual preferences. In this essay, the author analyzes three Coca-Cola ads from three different periods.
'Delicious and Refreshing' was one of the prevailing Coca-Cola slogans in the 1920s. As seen in the ad (Figure 1), several individuals are in different clothing types. A man and a woman in fashionable clothing are at the very front. At the back are a man and a woman in a convertible car. A steward was serving a woman on a horse a glass of Coca-Cola to their side. Behind her is a young man on a horse too. The fashionable clothing, the convertible car, and the horses' persons highlight that people in higher societal statuses can still enjoy drinking Coke. The name Coca-Cola appears in the front and at the back of the ad. Having the name twice on the ad helps to highlight the product. Stressing the product is done again by having a steward serving a lady a glass of Coca-Cola in the ad.

One of the creative techniques used to attract the consumer's attention is the many and diverse groups of people in the ad. Having many people in the ad helps to understand that everyone enjoys a Coke. Another creative technique is the use of high-class-looking people in the ad. The technique clearly shows whom the ad was meant for. I dislike this because the ad focuses solely on the upper class. Such a biased portrayal can only serve to attract the attention of the upper class while repelling that of the middle and lower class.
Given the period this ad came out, it is possible that most people would have interpreted it differently. During this time, Coca-Cola was still a product out of reach for most Americans. However, with such an ad, it is possible that some people would have thought that drinking Coca-Cola is what the upper class does, and, therefore, only they can afford it. At the same time, some would have thought that since it was what people of the upper class did, then drinking a Coke meant that you had achieved success.
