Migration into the Land of the Free involves a very tedious set of tasks to be accomplished. Things could be difficult for the majority of those who want to experience the life of an American in the United States. However, a lot of people have this strong desire to experience a greener pasture that the USA could offer. Others would even have this as their dream during their childhood. Giustina from the book Mount Allegro has mentioned that when she grows up, she wanted to become an American citizen (Mangione, ch.1). This was shown in the first chapter of the said book. Furthermore, this clearly illustrates that because of several external influences, people get to have the dream of becoming one of the privileged who can freely live in America.
This paper seeks to discuss the different immigration steps people need to follow to enter the United States of America. These processes will be further supported by excerpts from various pieces of literature.
Migration comprises a three-step process that requires courage and determination. The first step in the immigration process is the physical passage of hopeful individuals through officers and other barriers. These could need tons of fortune from one’s place of origin to be at par with the living standards set in the United States. The novel entitled Brooklyn has presented an idea on the different immigration requirements that one should accomplish. This is to let them enter the American land. According to this novel, some necessary forms and certifications need accomplishment. One vital document should be a health certificate signifying a general sense of well-being for the migrant.
Another thing that immigration officers want to have a visualization of is the financial capability of the hopeful. Also, there should be a certification that the individual who seeks entry into the US is employed by a US employer. To add up, a character reference is a crucial tool to enter the US gates (Toibin). This excerpt from the novel of Toibin clearly illustrates the struggles one may face opening the gates of America.
Supposed that an individual has successfully surpassed this step, there are other challenges that he or she must face. The second step from the whole process is the process of assimilation. This step, however, is the most controversial and the most challenging one. Here, one should absorb the culture, traditions, and the social aspects of America. This adaptation could be in the form of language. Some people tend to adapt to the American accent, and this could be mixed with their traditional way of communicating. In the novel Brooklyn by Toibin, Father Flood was described as a tall Irish man who has his accent incorporated with both his original nationality and that of an American. This is an example of cultural adaptation which could be challenging to achieve.
