Arturo’s Transformation in “Ask the Dusk”
Urbanization first flourished in the Western world. We consider them first world countries, having the capabilities that every nation dream of. Living in the western civilization nowadays matters extravagantly due to inventions and advancements, most immigrants are aiming to live in these countries. But have you ever thought of what kind of living do they have in the old times? In the beginning of their civilization?
The western culture, mainly the American culture, has its own original story as to why such customs and beliefs were formed. Having that American dream up until now is like a dream yet to come true because of the challenges that a person needs to surpass before living his life in the western boarders. If people suffer now due to discrimination and immoral treatments just to attain that goal, what more do people in the past experienced? Do travelling across the Western boarders as easy as a snap of a finger? Do they experience respect and understanding during their times?
Ask the Dusk became an eye opener for people experiencing immorality and unjust treatment during the early eras of the western world. Treating other nationalities as inadequate or alien in their country. Giving them less of the treatment a person should have. The story of Bandini mainly circles around his path towards his dream to become a writer in the first world countries (Bracey).
Arturo’s story began from Colorado to Los Angeles. Living his writer life in a hotel in California, Arturo was fascinated with the beauty of California, how the city looks, and how it made him felt complete. Arturo having a great sense of humor seems to show his lighter side, Arturo kept more than a hundred copies of his work “The Little Dog Laughed”.
Arturo being mentored by Hackmuth, affects him a lot and made him discover the best in him. Arturo living in Los Angeles, shows how he loves the city so much. Through writing, Arturo showed his admirations for the place. Knowing people around the place, made Arturo not feel alone. Having friends and neighbors around the city made everything feel lighter. Every person has their own problems and their own goals in life that was what Arturo had in mind. As time pass by, Arturo met Camila whom he will treat as his Mayan Princess, the great love of his life. Arturo loved Camilla, but it the end she ended up with her workmate, the bartender. Camilla and Sammy lived on the desert, in a place full of pollution and unwanted situation. Arturo became so obsessed with Camilla doing everything to win her back. In Symbolism, Camilla can be thought of as someone who is a hophead, a drug addict, which in the end made her body fail and died due to its effects (Bracey).
