The outstanding theme in Brent Staples' essay ''Black men and Public space'' is racial discrimination. In this essay, Staple (1986) narrates how living in New York City as a black man is tough, with the white people judging him by the color of his skin rather than the truth of his character. No matters his appearance or what he does, those who do not like him consider him as a threat. The author testifies about being frequently avoided and feared by those who do not know his real character.
In the poem, ‘‘Let America be America Again’’ by Langston Hughes, the central theme is the failure of the American Dream. The poet compares the true identity of America with the American dream to show what America has become. According to Hughes (1935), America was meant for freedom and equality, but it has become the opposite as a result of oppression, greed, and inequality associated with the country.
