ENGL 60: Essay #2_
Shakespeare’s As You Like It is often categorized as a pastoral comedy or romance due to its inclusion of many of the themes, figures and settings common to the pastoral mode: courtiers masquerading as shepherds in love, an idyllic and idealized rural community in the forest of Arden, a harsh and critical picture of life in the city and the world of court, a lively celebration of song, dance and poetry and, of course, the pursuit of pleasure in all its forms. While Shakespeare’s play contains many of these elements of the pastoral, there remains, nevertheless, a decidedly “anti-pastoral” strain in As You Like It, one that undercuts, questions and even satirizes the pastoral mode as a highly romanticized and not particularly realistic portrait of country life. The kind of romantic discourse associated with the pastoral is perhaps subject to the harshest criticism here, as many characters, Rosalind in particular, routinely comment on the cliched nature of pastoral verse and the superficial understanding of love that such verse promotes. Not that Shakespeare disparages or abandons the pastoral mode altogether; rather, his play borrows and appropriates many of the conventions and themes of the pastoral in order to fashion a new and different understanding of the genre. Discuss the generic, formal and thematic relationships between one of the works we have read the second half of this semester and Shakespeare’s As You Like It. You may choose from one of the following texts:Thomas More Utopia
Sir Philip Sydney Astrophil and Stella
Christopher Marlowe “The Passionate Shepherd to His
Love”
Sir Walter Raleigh “The Nymph’s Reply to the
Shepherd”
Edmund Spenser “October” from The Shepheardes CalendarPlease be sure to consider not only the ways in which the text you choose and As You Like It are similar to one another, but also just as importantly, the ways in which they differ.
Remember that Shakespeare’s As You Like It is more than the sum total of its influences and is a unique and original work in its own right.

Shakespeare’s As You Like It and Christopher Marlowe “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love”
Discuss the generic, formal and thematic relationships between one of the works we have read the second half of this semester and Shakespeare’s As You Like It.
Shakespeare’s As You Like It challenges conventions on romance, gender roles, and the natural environment. Rosalind goes to the forest where she encounters her love interest Orlando, but covers up as a shepherd boy and convinces encourage Orlando to court her. The work is a romantic and poetic comedy that is part of pastoral poetry where one of the themes is life in the country in contrast to the city. Pastoral poetry is idealistic and tends to focus on rural subjects and aspects of life including shepherds and shepherdesses where life in the countryside is romanticized. Christopher Marlowe’s “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” is a poem on the love of a shepherd to his beloved, where he invites her to come and live with him in the countryside setting and he promises to do his best if the love interest agrees. As You Like It and “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love” focus on love and romantic ideals in natural settings.
The two works link the pastoral world and the outside itself to explore the generic relationships in pastoral romance, but Shakespeare is more political and focuses on complex relations among the characters. Love flourishes and there is romance in rustic settings, but this is possible when the lovers move away into such settings and are separated from others. However, the romantic ideals in the works also imply that there is exaggeration on what lovers can do and achieve. “Embroidered all with leaves of Myrtle” (Marlowe line 12). The poet mentions, “myrtle”, but this is difficult to find in England compared to southern Europe and shows that the scene is not entirely real.
The two works follow the patterns and structures of the pastoral literary genre and convention through idealizing t...
