Most European nations were Catholics at the time of fall of the Roman Empire. Some European leaders also at the time of fall of Roman Empire were Catholics. The leaders had the desire to spread Christianity, especially the Catholic faith, and to conquer new lands. The king of Spain, in 1942, motivated by the desire to capture new lands sent Christopher Columbus to a new land where Christianity was not known to convert the people to Christianity. The lingering question is what enhanced the spread of Christianity in a New World? Columbus knowledge and the desire to acquire more wealth and fame contributed to the spread of Christianity in the New World. Columbus was an experienced Marine (Miller, 2018). Columbus marine experience is seen from the excerpt where he claims that they had evidence that no man has used that route before, ‘Westerly route, in which direction we have hitherto no certain evidence that any one has gone’ (Paul, 1996). Columbus’s navigation skills made him a favorite to the King of Spain as a man who could find the New World. Another factor that made him a favorite in the journey is his knowledge of Christianity and nature of his understanding. From the excerpt, Columbus is to learn the people of the New World and know the best approach to use to convert the people to Christianity; this could have only been possible if Columbus himself had knowledge of Christianity and understanding of the people he was going to convert to Christianity.
