What was republicanism, and why was it radical?
Republicanism was not only an elective system of government, but it was a core ideology and a way of life that required Americans to be committed to liberty, civil rights, implement emancipation, and reject monarchy (Wood 91). In particular, it was radical since it emphasized civil rights for all citizens regardless of their skin color, which gave slaves freedom. Radical Republicans prioritized equal political rights of African Americans, as was the case with the whites.
