Fear of the Legislature by the Elites and Problems with the Articles of Congress: Response on Chapter VII of Gordon Wood's The American Revolution
Within a decade of the declaration of independence, some Americans, especially the elites, were not happy with the country's direction. Two key points of concern were the inability of the confederation to accomplish its roles both locally and internationally and the immense power enjoyed by the legislature since 1776.
The revolution played a crucial role in opening up opportunities for prosperity to lower population levels in terms of socioeconomic classes (Wood 128). As a result, the elites believed that too many ordinary people were meddling the republican equality and social order. As a result, state legislatures were radically democratized, opening avenues for ordinary people to influence decisions and achieve leadership roles. Instead, the elites and leaders pushed for the consolidation of power at the central government through strengthening the congress and senate to regain control from the state and local legislature.
