Transformations in Mexico before the 1910 Revolution
The leadership of a country greatly determines the kind of changes and shifts that will happen in the country. For example, before the revolution that was staged in 1910, Mexico was under the rule of Diaz Mori. He ruled the country for more than three decades, and great changes happened during that time. This paper will investigate the major transformations that occurred in Mexico from the end of the colonial period until the great Mexican revolution was staged. The paper will also determine whether change or continuity characterized the century and argue for the most important factors.
Prior to the Mexican revolution, some major transformations happened in Mexico. The most notable of these transformations happened during the reign of Diaz Mori. This leader ruled in Mexico for 34 years prior to the Mexican revolution. Following are some of the major transformations. First, in his quest to make Mexico a modern and industrialized country, Diaz changed the economic system to capitalism. Therefore, he was obsessed with the development of factories, dams, and roads. While these may seem good, the downside is that implementing capitalism came with numerous negative effects. The peasants and the rural workers greatly suffered since they were the ones used to implement these economic goals. The second major transformation was that Dias's dictatorial regime resulted in using bullying and intimidation to make Mexican citizens support him. The dictatorship greatly led to the oppression of the people. The freedom of the press was significantly curtailed. There is no doubt that one of the most factors that demonstrates an oppressive regime is to suppress the press. With the press suppressed, it was hard for the outside world to know what was happening in Mexico. Consequently, the dictatorial regime got favorable ground to continue with their dictatorial practices.
The century was most characterized by change. As noted above, one of the major changes was changing the country's economic system to capitalism.
