Irrigation has been a major component of the Green Revolution in India, which involved using a high-yielding variety of seeds, use of modern technology, chemical fertilizers, and pesticides to increase productivity. In India, irrigation continues to be used as a strategy of modernization to eradicate traditional farming methods with scientific technologies to increase productivity. Modernization is the transformation of traditional rural society to secular urban society (Reinhard, 292-294). In Andhra Pradesh, the construction of canals to provide water for irrigation in the dry and drought-prone areas provided wages and enough food to provide to their families. As a result, there was increased surplus and enough resources to feed the families as well as increased revenue to the state through selling of the excess grains.
From history, the family units were structured for males to control the land, capital, and labor for females (Priti, 103-117).
