Immigration reforms have remained fundamental similar to the civil rights and desegregation throughout the history of the united states (US). In the past centuries, immigration reforms have been greatly influenced by the civil rights movement. As noted, the civil rights movement was about winning full and equal citizenship for African Americans with citizenship being a major call. Citizenship was important and according to supreme court Chief justice Earl Warren, citizenship is “a man’s basic right.” (229). Accordingly, Charles L Black noted that citizenship needs not to neglect the rights of the aliens amongst us (230). As such, the Civil right Act 1964 and Voting Rights and Immigration Act of 1965 are watershed legislations under John F Kennedy era. These policies overturned decade long legal traditions of race discrimination in USA. The Immigration Act of 1965 repealed system of national origin but also reproduced the system of illegal immigration especially immigrants from Mexico (227).
