Immigration continues to be a significant issue in the United States (U.S.). When former President Donald Trump won the 2016 Presidential election, it was mainly due to his continued resentment of America’s open-door policy to immigrants. However, when he came to power, his treatment of immigrants in the U.S. would render him unpopular among American liberals and advocacy groups within and outside the U.S. Biden’s administration does not want to repeat the actions of Trump’s government. However, it is also keen on addressing the immigration issue in more subtle means (Solis, 2021). This makes immigration a ‘hot button issue’ in America.
Right-wing Americans do not want to deal with the ever-increasing number of immigrants in the country (Jones, 2019). For years, the inflow of Mexicans and citizens from other Central American countries have rendered many Americans jobless. The allure of cheap labour has prompted several business owners to lay off Americans favouring immigrants. This creates tension in the country because the economy is dependent on the growth of trade. However, in this same economy, most Americans are now unemployed. Besides affecting the country economically, immigration has also had social and political effects. Before the twenty-first century, African Americans were the minority in the U.S. Today; however, Latinos are the largest minority group. Given their current status, Latinos realize that they do not share the same resources as other Americans. To correct this, group consciousness has emerged within this group, resulting in political participation.
Still, immigration in the U.S. does not concern Central Americans only. America attracts many citizens from across the globe because of its opportunities. For years, the most powerful country has opened its doors and opportunities to immigrants. Today, however,...
