Image Of Africa History Essay. Hunger in Africa

Essay Instructions:

  1. 1.      How has the “image of Africa,” as presented by Conrad and/or as described in Parker and Shipton, shaped scholarly understandings of Africa? You will write an essay answering this question by carefully re-reading texts assigned for the class so far, and perhaps rewatching the film about Timbuktu. Using specific quotes from each of these sources, write an essay in which you do the following:
    1. Define “the idea of Africa” as a set of no less than three and no more than five propositions. (e.g. African societies have no written history before the colonial period, Africans have undeveloped material culture, etc). Choose one of these aspects to focus on for the rest of the paper.
    2. Support your definition with material from Conrad, Trump’s discussion of “shithole countries,” etc.
    3. Using the historical sources from the class (weeks 3, 4, & 6), argue if, when, and how the aspects of the “idea of Africa” you have defined have shaped scholarly understandings of Africa. Be careful to distinguish and discuss both scholarly understandings as expressed in the texts (the author’s own words and “take”) and scholarly understandings represented in the texts (the author’s description of other scholar’s work).

Completed essays will be 3-5 standard pages in length (11 or 12 pt font, double spaced, 1 inch margins), will include standard MLA author-page number citations, and will be accompanied by a works cited page with correct bibliographic citations (not included in page count). It will be difficult to fully answer the question for either topic in  only 3-5 pages. You will need to edit carefully. Essays must be submitted as shared Google doc files noon on October 24th. Image of Africa
Many people have written about Africa. However, for the most part, there appears to be an underlying theme in all these writings. Africa, apparently, is not made to look as beautiful as the continent appears to be in these writings. Comments by famous people including the current president of the United States continue to vilify and malign Africa from the rest of the world. The beliefs being propagated about Africa and Africans have helped shaped the image of an entire continent. The outside world considers the continent to be one. Stories about hunger in, for example, Kenya will most likely be included in news houses with a headline that reads, “Hunger in Africa.” From the outside world, nothing good can come from this beautiful continent. However, since almost all the stories and history books about Africa are written by outsiders, is the world getting a holistic view of this continent? Are the good things about Africa being shielded from people to help spread a vilifying image of the continent? Well, this article seeks to confirm that indeed, Africa’s representation is distorted, and the idea of Africa as covered in the history books is not an accurate representation of Africa. The idea of Africa as propagated by European outlets is that Africa has undeveloped material culture; Africa is the antithesis of civilization; Africa has no written history before the colonial period; Africa has no credibility with regards to discussing matters of the world. All these have been written about, are being talked about, and help form an image of Africa to the rest of the world. In their article, John and Rathbone while referencing Mudimbe write that “the idea of Africa was initially fashioned not by Africans but by non-Africans, as a ‘paradigm of difference’.” This statement sets the stage for what is to be discussed further in this article because this article seeks to showcase the idea that Africa does have a history, but those who tell it, did not live it.
First of all, Africa has been depicted as the ‘other world’ by many historians who came to the continent as explorers. Others who have written about Africa have done so in fictional narratives that are then taken to depict a picture of the entire continent. One person stands out among other writers because his work has to this day helped to shape and paint a picture of Africa as the antithesis of civilization. Joseph Conrad published h...
