Christopher Columbus and Leif Ericsson: the connection is who really discovered America. Columbus is accredited as the 1st European to discover the Americas. However, Leif Ericsson visited North America roughly 500 years before Christopher Columbus arrived. About 1,000 A. D, Eriksson sailed off course as he was going to Greenland, thereby landing on North American continent, and called it Vinland (EyeWitness to History 42).
Benjamin Franklin and Richard Saunders: The connection is Poor Richard’s Almanac. This was an annual almanac that Benjamin Franklin published. Poor Richard’s Almanac was the best seller for a pamphlet that was published in colonies in America with author being Richard Saunders, who was actually Benjamin Franklin making use of another pseudonym (EyeWitness to History 49).
Mary Dyer and Richard Nixon: the connection is the hanging of Mary Dyer, a martyr. She was one of the 4 Quakers who were hanged in Boston for the crime of refusing to leave the Massachusetts Bay Colony according to the statutes that banned Quakers from the Puritan colony. President Nixon endorsed the hanging (EyeWitness to History 127).
James Garfield and Alexander Graham Bell: the link is the shooting of President Garfield in July of the year 1881 who stayed ill until his death on September 19, 1881 since a bullet was lodged in his chest. Bell had reasoned that the technology employed in his telephone could be utilized in constructing a device that could detect metal and therefore locate the bullet lodged inside the president’s chest; a device initially suggested by Simon Newcomb. Even though Newcomb and Bell succeeded in creating the device, Bell failed to save the life of Garfield (EyeWitness to History 64).
