History Discussion: Thomas Jefferson and the American Revolution

Make a discussion to Instructor's Statement: whether Jefferson's election and political vision as President truly commensurate with his idealism presented in his Declaration of Independence of 1776? One can posit that Jefferson the author of the Declaration of Independence and Jefferson the President were two very different people. Jefferson the author argued for an America that was rebelling against the legitimate rule of the British Crown. In 1801, Jefferson had assumed the position of American President as if he were the Crown and as such acted in arbitrary ways. He completely ignored the federal appointments of his immediate predecessor, as the case of Marbury v. Madison suggests. He conducted the purchase of the Louisiana territory in ways that were in fact unconstitutional laced with negotiations that in fact provided lack of good title. He conducted a foreign policy that did not assume a neutral stance and therefore invited a war with Great Britain. Although he was a strict constitutionalist, he in fact treated the Constitution with a broader sense of interpretation. In summary, Jefferson the president did little to project the ideals of his own Declaration of Independence into his Presidency twenty-five years later.
