Writer Lyz Lenz observed a debate concerning Midwestern voters and their party-political opinions and religious convictions following the 2016 presidential election. When she discovered that she and her spouse had cast their ballots for separate presidential applicants, her politically split marriage ended. She began to question the influence of religion on politics in the middle of the country. These debates took place in churches throughout the Midwest, which Lenz analyzes in her book God Land: A Story of Faith, Loss, and Renewal in Middle America. Lenz discusses the impact of religious organizations on our opinions and whether or not the citizens can reconcile their radical and religious differences. Having heard of the book, it piqued my curiosity since it combined practically all of my interests: art, religion, and community. After reading the book, how I viewed and understood my culture changed in many ways, as explained in this paper.
God Land is a book that offers a unique perspective on a growing demographic of individuals who grew up in my Christian churches and those going through a divorce. It works as a biography, maybe because it is a nonfiction chronicle of Lenz's existence (Nabhan-Warren 323). As a result, this particular human life has an incredible mind and aptitude for description that resemble my culture. It clearly and concisely describes the failings of the world around me from the perspective of one who has grown out of the structures I have previously believed to be accurate and responsible for much social injustice.
