The account by Bartoleme De Las Casas highlights the 1492 discovery and exploration of the Indies by the Spaniards (Las Casas par.1). The author, with admirable industry, describes the native people who occupied the territory hitherto. He also describes the wanton devastation they suffered at the hands of ruthless, greedy, and ungrateful Spaniards.
Chapter 9 of the book by Gabriel Paquette explores the labor regimes that characterized the Seaborne Empires. The author intimates that the empires practiced free and coerced labor (Paquette 145). He pays particular attention to forced labor, its various forms, and the consequences it occasioned. For instance, he shows the drastic contributions of coerced labor to slavery.
The reading by Neal Salisbury shines its spotlight on the colonial period of North American history (29). In this regard, the author seeks to dispel the widely held maxim that the North American lands were uninhabited before the arrival of colonizers (Salisbury 30).
