Child abuse is the mistreatment or misuse of a child. It can be physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, neglect, or parental substance abuse. A child abuser is characterized by emotional and psychological instability, a history of abuse during their younger days, alcohol and substance abuse, poor self-concept, and immaturity. Child sexual abuse is the most reported crime against children since it is easier to detect and report, especially if committed by a stranger, compared to the other crimes. This study seeks to analyze the characteristics of a child abuser as indicated by various researchers.
Castro et al. (2021) argue that child sexual abuse has become a global concern due to its increased prevalence of negative consequences on children. Relevant professionals must have adequate knowledge of the characteristics of child abusers and victims of child abuse. Understanding the relationship between the abuser and the victim helps formulate intervention strategies necessary to reduce the abuse.
