Good prenatal care is vital for a child’s health. During the first three months of development, the unborn child is usually at risk of several complications. However, many pregnant women are often unaware of the pregnancy during this time (Human Development Teaching & Learning Group, 2021). Teratogens are factors that can produce functional or physical defects in the unborn child when the mother is exposed to them. Drugs, alcohol, and parental diseases comprise some these constituents. Teratogen exposure affects the developing infant in various ways depending on the teratogenic substance, timing of exposure, and embryo development stage. This exposure can result in problems in emotional and behavioral growth, physical malformations, and a decrease in the child’s intellectual quotient.
