Usually, the Tea party is known as an afternoon gathering where small meals known as the afternoon tea are served. However, in America, it had a different meaning altogether. Tea Party is an American fiscally conservative political movement which was formed within the Republican Party. Tea Party movement was created in Feb. 29th 2009 after the inauguration of President Barrack Obama. Its formation was due to the financial crisis that affected the globe in 2008 leading to several sentiments by the populists. Commentator Rick Santelli became the catalyst for the Tea party movement. Santelli first called it the Boston Tea Party and this was in reaction to mortgage relief plan by President Obama.
Santelli projected for a Chicago Tea Party whose aim was to object the intervention by government in the housing marketplace. Joyce states that the main focus of Tea Party movement in America was to monitor the central government and commend the merits of free market philosophy. Tea party acquired its popularity in social media sites which were mainly used to coordinate events. They were encouraged and projected by conservative pundits such as Fox News Channel’s Glenn Beck (Joyce). The first action by Tea Party movement occurred on April 15, 2009, with over 250,000 individuals. The Tea Party movement became influential in the 2009 summer when they held town hall meetings to debate the proposed health care insurance reforms.
