How my Educational Experience Changed My Life
In our lives, we go through various experiences that can affect our lives positively or negatively. Life is all about learning and that is the main reason why education is important in everyone’s life. When we go through experiences, we will always keep memories especially when they are positive. In my case, my high school experience completely changed my life.
When I was sixteen years, I was still in my high school and I remember one day, our history teacher organized a visit for us to one of the children's home that was near our school. I was very happy because at least I would get some time off my books and get to interact with new individuals whom I have never met before. Of course, I had previously gone to so many charity works from our local church and during my primary school days, but it was not until the time when I went to high school that my view on the disadvantaged people in the society changed. In the previous events, we would go and work with the children, play with them, share our experiences with them and encourage them. Unfortunately, we had no time to listen to each of them about their experiences and how they ended up in the children's home. On this visit, however, I tried as much as I can to communicate with at least one of the children and get to know them better.
I met Adrian, 9 years old at the field when we were still playing with the children. I admired his character since he was silent from the beginning of the game to the end. He rarely talked and he would always smile and cheer on his team whenever they scored against our team. After introducing myself to him, I started sharing my experiences on how I grew up and it was now his turn to share his experiences. I did not know that such a young boy would be having such an avid memory since he recounted events in his life in an accurate manner. However, it is not his avid memory that changed my life but rather it is what the young man went through in his life that changed my life completely up to date.
Adrian was born in a family of three in Haiti. His father Thomson was a miller while his mother Regina was a teacher in a local nearby school. They had a good life with the support of their mother and teacher and the other two siblings. One was elder while the other one was younger than Adrian. Through their early childhood memories, Adrian told me that they would stick together and play together with his siblings. On 12th January 2010, he was playing with the other street kids including his siblings at one of the local fields. As they were playing, suddenly they had a sound like that or a tornado or a bomb dropping. Then the ground started shaking violently as the sound continued. Adrian told me that everyone was running in their own direction to their homes. “I held my younger brother and we started running to our home when the shaking became too much. As I was almost getting to our house, I saw our house shake and it fell down. I had nowhere that I would run to. All I remember is that I saw darkness last and the next time I found myself in a camp with so many people. “Adrian to...
