HeLa Cell Culture
HeLa cell culture is the oldest and commonly used human cell in scientific research, which is an immortal cell line. The HeLa cell culture was derived from cervical cancer from a cancer patient named Henrietta Lacks in 1951. She was a mother of five children who did not survive the disease and lost her life on October 4. The cell line turned out to be very durable hence perfect for use in scientific research. This work describes the origin of the HeLa cell culture, the main characteristics, and its requirements.
Origin
Henrietta Lacks, a cervical cancer patient, was admitted in 1951 to John Hopkins Hospital with irregular vaginal bleeding and was treated. Dr. George Grey, the Tissue Culture Laboratory head in the hospital, researched and evaluated Lacks' cervical biopsy samples. Cells from the samples cultured using the roller-tube technique multiplied rapidly within 20-24 hours, contrary to previous specimens that died. The experiment on cells from Lack's was a milestone for Grey because he had tried several others from his cancer patients, but the results were disappointing. He aimed to cure cancer by creating an immortal line of cells to develop medicine and therapies (Skloot, 29-34).
The experimentation on Lacks' cells was done without her consent or consent from her relatives, although it was not a requirement at the time. Grey later donated the cells and other tools to scientists who requested them for scientific research. The cell was named HeLa after Henrietta Lacks, although this only came into effect in the 1970s when the story behind the cells' donor was known. HeLa cells are immortal because they multiply rapidly when cultured under favourable conditions.
