Characteristics and Mechanism of Secondary Active Transport
Secondary active transport is typically the displacement of sodium ions towards the cell's gradients. Under the secondary active transport system, ions substances usually move against their gradient. Two molecules can choose to move in one direction or the opposite direction, but it is applicable in one cell. When ions move in the same direction, it uses symporter while when they move in the opposite direction, they use antiporter to transport proteins in a cell. Secondary active transport does not require ATP to transport proteins in and out of a cell. The energy to transport ions in a cell is derived from a concentration gradient, usually free energy (Shi, 2013). There are several differences between primary and secondary active transport. The energy required to transport proteins in primary active transport is derived from ATP.
