Circle Person X: A Reflection
The stranger effect is powerful and suggestive so much so to pique interest and generate
curiosity. In a world crowded enough and busy enough, strangers are everywhere. Indeed,
friends, co-workers and acquaintances could, in a sense and in a crowded place be mistaken for
strangers. There is, in fact, so much to know coming across a stranger, more so if silence reigns.
So, in contemplating which circle I should choose to focus on, I find best a circle of a stranger or, perhaps strangers, I am part of. Typically, I am always around strangers I have no connections whatsoever to. For one, I love sitting at some place and watch. This is best done at a public place full of strangers who, usually in a hurry, do not stay long as at, say, a coffee shop or a restaurant. So, for two hours, having a cup of coffee in hand, I kept roaming at a well known super store watching and recording, in writing and memory, what I saw and noticed.
I was at home supplies section. Then came a guy who looked so agitated. Initially, we just exchanged quick looks. Obviously, he was in a rush looking for some tool or something. I just kept watching, sideways, while he was scanning shelves feverishly. The cell phone range.
The guy, looking up, got even more agitated. He picked up and, after a series of swear words, he hanged up and resumed, now more frantically, his search. The guy, most probably in mid 40s, was, as I could hardly collect from his short phone call, trying to find a tool to fix a pipe one of his kids broke.
