Hate it or love it, networking has become an essential component of our everyday life, especially in a workplace setting where one has to interact with others. The phrase no man is an island teaches us that for one to thrive in every aspect of living, we need a shoulder to lean on. Networking in the organisational perspective implies the ability to build a professional and interpersonal connection with co-workers, business partners, clients, and even friends to leverage their professionalism and assistance in times of need. Networking has always been thought to be an uphill task for introverts as opposed to extroverts because of the notion that the former are under-connected and socially impaired (Zack, 2019 p.5). Nevertheless, everybody, be it an introvert or an extrovert, must strive to build strong connections bearing in mind that there is so much at stake especially in a large organisation and also given that networking has numerous benefits.
Networking manifests itself through informal social gatherings but has immense benefits to the career development of an individual. Interacting more with high-ranking individuals of the organisation while contributing meaningful ideas makes one noticeable. Being noticeable by being a reliable and reputable team member is essential in advancing one’s career. Actively networking also increases the access to professionals with the necessary skills and experience to further build a career. Networking also breeds the aspect of diversity, enabling one to interact with people from different professions. Diversity broadens one perception and approaches to a problem because one can borrow ideas and skills from people of varied professionalism in a network.
Large organisations have different departments that can only thrive through extensive networking. The marketing department, for instance, is heavily reliant on one’s ability to build relationships with customers or potential clients. Mergers and acquisitions are common practices of large organisations these days as they seek to expand their market reach. Fruitful mergers are dependent on the ability of the concerned individuals to develop strong networks sufficient to deter any incompatibilities that may arise. It is also worth noting that strong connections within and without the organisation are necessary during job searches and while seeking promotions that may require validation from others.
