Relationship between Race and Place
Latinos immigration into the East Los Angeles part of the United States brought to light an interesting phenomenon in relation to shaping of physical, cultural and social landscapes. While the houses, the streets and outdoor spaces originally bore all the signs of American architectural design, the Latinos changed them to suit their true spirit. Every change, however, small serves to clearly show who the settlers of East Los Angeles are. The houses have been newly designed in such a way that they give room for more social interaction. Fences in the American sense have the purpose of shutting out the outside world and ensuring security. Latinos, however, use them to strengthen their social bond while still guarding the private space. Neighbors can freely chat over their fences without necessarily having to step into each others’ compounds. The yards, in addition, are used as a personal expression. Fenced enclosures, they provide a place for friends and families to socialize without interfering with the lives of their neighbors. In other words, they serve as a personal identity and expression of the social form of their owners.
