Essay Instructions:

All the materials in the article must have a corner mark, and there must be a mark on the bottom of each page, the Chicago format. The last page must have additional work cited.
Please choose a document from the Major Problems readings for the week you are writing. In a 1-2 page paper please respond to your chosen document. Your paper should include a bibliographical reference and it the evidence you provide to support your ideas, should have 2 parts to it.
The first part of your paper should be a candid response to the document.  Did you enjoy this document, did you find it overly long, or difficult to understand?  Why did you choose this document to respond to?  Did something about it stick out as familiar or surprising?  Was there something you found interesting or intriguing?
The second part of the paper should be a textual analysis focused on why the document was created in the way it was.  What type of document is it (an article, a speech, a letter, etc)?  Who was intended to read it?  What did the author want to accomplish or say through the work, and just as importantly- were they successful in their aims?  Why or why not?  What choices did they make that allowed the work to achieve that aim (or not)?  Does your analysis of the document relate to your earlier reaction to the document (is it suitable that you didn’t find a supreme court case to be very exciting, or that a political speech was written in clear accessible language)?  Remember to be specific and use examples from the text (with citations) to describe your ideas.
Thank you!

The aim of this paper is to provide a response and conduct a textual analysis of the document.
Response
This document was selected because of the US frequent use of military power to drive her foreign ambitions. Although it is popular in Europe and in the US, Russia, and the majority of countries in the east view it as a way of interfering with their self-governance. In fact, the document indicates that “American military presence in Europe is essential.” This statement is disturbing as it suggests that the only way of establishing peace is through the use of the military. Nevertheless, an interesting aspect of the document is how the United States used military power to protect other countries from self-destruction. Panama was freed from dictatorship, democracy was restored in Poland and Bosnia, and peace was established between Palestine and Israel. These selfless actions truly reflect an America that the document describes as “the center of a widening circle of freedom.” The document is enjoyable to read and its brief nature coupled with precise statements enhances the understandability of its content.[Bush, George...
