Option 1: McCarthyism and Anti-Communist Campaigns 
The Cold War brought about an irrational fear of communism and communist activities in the United States. As we are learning this week, one of the most vocal instigators of this paranoia was Senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy delivered a speech about the imminent threat of communism on February 9, 1950. Perform a search on the internet and locate and read Joseph McCarthy's speech given in Wheeling, West Virginia on February 9, 1950. Copy and paste the following keywords into your Google search bar: "Joseph McCarthy, Wheeling, West Virginia." The speech is also referred to as "Enemies from Within."

Construct the case study by responding to the following prompts:

  • Explain how Senator Joseph McCarthy defined communist nations within the speech. What specific threats did these nations pose?
  • Assess if Senator Joseph McCarthy charges were accurate.
  • Analyze anti-communist sentiments during the Cold War era, were these sentiments valid. If so, how? If not, why not?

The I Have a Dream speech is the most famous address in the world owing to the impact it had in the promotion of racial equality. It was given by Martin Luther King Jr. at the in Lincoln Memorial steps on the 28th August 1963 and has been recognized as the greatest impact of the civil rights movement. In the speech, King spoke against racial segregation and profiling (Corbett, Janssen & Lund, 2019). He advocated for a cessation of the excessive racial segregation between African Americans and the whites in the American society. In so doing, he convinced his followers on the importance of undertaking urgent interventions to against racial segregation. King’s leadership led African Americans to demand for racial justice. He started a great crusade to push for civil rights that led to the enactment of the civil rights act of 1964 to bring to an end the racial segregation to mark the epitome of the civil rights movement.
King led mass protests to advocate for racial equality and end the segregation laws in the country. After the abolishment of slavery in 1865, the African Americans achieved the right to citizenship and vote. However, they continued to be victims of different forms of racial injustice from the whites (Carson, 2019). The introduction of the Jim Crow laws took this constitutionally granted rights away by continued segregation. This denied African Americans access to the best education, social and economic opportunities. King carried out a successful fight against such segregation and managed to change the nation in several ways. To begin with, King organized a bus boycott which saw him arrested and put in Birmingham jail where he wrote his famous letter from that touched hundreds of people to protest his arrest.
The unrest led to the introduction of the Civil Rights Bill by President John F. Kennedy into the Congress. The Bill ambolished permitted discrimination in public places and as a result, it gained support from several groups. The culimination of this was a rally in Washington on 28th August, 1963 where King delivered the I Have a Dream speech in fron of 250,000 people (McGill, 2017). The speech helped lobby for the passing of the Civil Rights Act by the Congress 1964 which ended racial segregation. In addition, the civil rights movement also pushed for equality and end of poverty when he joined the striking workers in Memphis, Tennessee. This had a positive impact on the African American community access to social, economic, and educational services. Minorities enjoyed their constitution granted rights to vote, employment, and education (Donaldson, 2000). They also started to enjoy freedom from all the existing forms of discrimination. Additionally, the civil rights movement ensured the integration of minority communities in public areas that were previously not accessible.
The civil rights movement used various forms to push their agenda that can still be used in today’s society. All the methods had one thing in common as they did not condone the use of violence. The non-violent protests had better results in ending racial segregation. In 1963, King organized non-violent protests to fight against segregation in the public sector. Militant African American activists joined him in this push for freedom and liberation (Carson, 2019). By non-violent confrontation of injustices, activists can also lobby for justice and equality in the contemporary world with great success. For example, the black lives matter movement applied this strategy to speak against extrajudicial killings of African Americans by the police.
