Since time immemorial, human life has been plagued by wars for diverse reasons. From whichever dimension one looks at it, war is an undesirable eventuality with far-reaching implications. According to Clausewitz, everything in war is uncertain (USArmyWarCollege 2011). In his classic work, Clausewitz employs several terms and expounds on their implications on great power competition.
One of the terms that Clausewitz uses in his works is genius for war, which he describes as a combination of mind and temperament (Clausewitz 1873). He argues that these two elements combine to create highly developed mental capabilities for war in a warrior. As such, Clausewitz posits that a military genius’ talents go beyond the mere understanding of war. For instance, a military genius can inspire others by exhibiting enormous physical and mental courage.
