According to the most recent intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, natural ecosystems and people who are most vulnerable and whose coping capability is least are worst hit by global warming and climate change (Kirtman et al., 2013). The lives of several people around the world are currently at risk. The risk follows a dangerous, widespread negative manipulation of nature and a far-reaching disruption of the natural environmental phenomenon through human-induced climate change.
According to the IPCC chair, the report intends to warn people about the effects and consequences of taking no action to reduce and combat global warming and climate change (Kirtman et al., 2013). Over the next two years, the world is at risk of multiple hazards due to climate change, with temperatures expected to rise by 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) due to global warming (Kirtman et al., 2013). Severe impacts are likely to be felt once the temperatures exceed this level slightly. These impacts are likely to be irreversible and life-changing. Currently, there have been elevated and massive disasters, including heatwaves, floods, and drought, which have already passed the tolerance thresholds for animals and plants (Church et al., 2013). This has resulted in mass mortalities in plants such as trees and corals. Since the weather extremes are taking place simultaneously, impacts that are becoming difficult to manage are being felt worldwide. Some ways they are being felt include food and water insecurity among millions of people in Asia, South America, and Africa.
A sound action plan is urgently needed to adapt to the massive climate change and global warming changes. The plan will cushion loss, including loss of human life, biodiversity, and infrastructure. Further, a rapid and deep cut in greenhouse emissions should be authorized (Church et al., 2013). So far, attempts have been made, but the adaptation needs to be more balanced, with visible gaps between the actions taken and the requirements for dealing with the elevating risks. The IPCC report has identified more than one hundred and twenty-seven risks affecting the economic, ecosystems, health, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors (Church et al., 2013). In populations with low-income capacity, the gaps are most felt. The global hotspots for climate change and warming are in Southern Asia, Parts of America, and Parts of Africa (Church et al., 2013). In these countries, a number of factors are placing the people and natural ecosystems at risk of climate change effects. These factors include urbanization, population growth, and severely unsustainable development practices.
