Territorial Ambitions and War
Territorial ambitions have been a significant cause of war throughout history. States often compete over territory, and the desire to gain land is one of the primary motivations for going to war. However, territorial ambition alone cannot explain why some wars are fought while others are not. Territorial disputes do not always lead to armed conflict. Sometimes they are resolved peacefully through negotiations or mediation by third-party states or organizations. However, it is the leading cause of the war because nationalism, militarism, and economic interests require territorial benefits for sustainability.
The First World War resulted from several factors, but one of the most important was nationalism. Nationalism is a political movement that supports creating and expanding a separate nation-state with a distinct culture and economy (Paparella, 2022). It often entails believing that a country has the right to political independence and sovereignty and should be free from foreign interference. In some cases, nationalist movements are anti-imperialist and seek to establish self-governance for their people. Often, this desire for self-determination stems from colonial rule or occupation by an outside power (Paparella, 2022). Nationalism led people to believe they were part of something bigger than themselves and therefore had to protect it from outside forces, especially other countries. Some historians argue that nationalism alone does not explain why nations go to war.
